The Game Jam Experience

Development Hell is a game about game jams and game development. Over the years we learned that crunching is not the way. The more you crunch, the less you can focus, and more time is just spent treading water. We wanted to make a game that reflects the game jam experience, with a horror flavor. As long as you keep yourself rested, fed, and keep an eye out on your needs, it should all go okay. Of course, balance all of that with actually finishing your game.

Should be super easy.

Eating Mechanic

I scripted the logic to have the player hover their cursor over food items in the game and eat the food. Eating food items will contribute to the “fullness bar”, and overeating can have severe consequences for the player. The player can also use the bathroom to reduce fullness.

Scripted in Blueprints.

Pixel Post Process Material

I added a pixelated post process material to the scene with chromatic aberration to help give the game visuals a retro and spooky look.

Very crunchy!

Horror Level Mechanic

When the player’s mental state declines, the horror level increases, causing various effects to trigger. One of them is the computer screen becoming more abstract. Another is the light flickering, then turning red. The audio also becomes distorted.

The Horror Level system was implemented by me.
